Standard gypsum skim plaster usually takes between three and seven days to dry thoroughly, whereas full two-coat work or backing plaster can take up to two to three weeks. Fresh plaster starts as a dark, wet brown and transitions into a uniform, pale pink finish as the water evaporates. Decorating must wait until the pink coloration is consistent across the entire surface, without damp, dark patches around corners, joints, or exterior-facing walls.

Regional climate conditions in Exeter and Devon play a major role in curing duration. Coastal moisture and frequent damp weather in the South West slow evaporation rates, particularly in solid-walled homes. Drying should occur naturally through gentle, steady ventilation by cracking windows open. Rushing the process with high central heating or industrial space heaters must be avoided; rapid surface drying pulls moisture out unevenly, causing fine crazing, surface cracks, and structural delamination.

Once the plaster is completely pale pink and dry throughout, the surface must be primed with a mist coat. A mist coat consists of a standard, non-vinyl contract matt emulsion diluted with water (roughly 70% paint to 30% water), designed to soak into the porous substrate and establish a durable base key. Never seal newly plastered walls with PVA prior to painting, as PVA creates an impermeable, water-soluble film that prevents paint adhesion and causes emulsion to bubble and peel away over time.
