Skimming vs Plastering: What's the Difference?
Two terms that get used interchangeably, but they describe quite different work. Here's how to tell which one your walls actually need.

If you've started looking into having some plastering work done, you've probably come across the words 'plastering' and 'skimming' used almost as if they mean the same thing. They're closely related, but they describe different stages and different amounts of work — and understanding the difference can help you make sense of the quote you receive.
Plastering is the broader term. It covers the full process of preparing a surface and applying plaster to create an even, stable finish on walls and ceilings. That might involve assessing the existing surface, carrying out preparation, applying a base coat where the wall needs it, and then finishing. In other words, plastering can include several layers and a fair amount of remedial work before the final coat goes on.
Skimming, on the other hand, is a specific type of plastering. It's a thin finishing coat applied over a suitable existing surface — sound plaster that just needs refreshing, or newly installed plasterboard. The aim is a smooth, uniform finish that's ready for decorating once dry. There's far less preparation involved, because the surface beneath the skim is already in good condition.
So how do you know which one you need? It comes down to what's underneath. If your existing plaster is solid but looks tired, marked or uneven, skimming may be enough to bring it back to life. But if the plaster is loose, badly damaged, or missing in places, a skim coat alone won't solve the problem — the wall needs proper preparation, repairs, and possibly base coats before any finish is applied. That's broader plastering work.
The existing surface always determines what's needed, which is exactly why we offer free on-site quotes. Josh and the team will assess your walls and ceilings, explain honestly whether a skim will do the job or whether more extensive plastering is required, and set out the agreed scope and price before any work begins.
