Good plastering starts with good preparation — and that's not just about the walls. A bit of thought before the plasterer arrives can make the whole job run more smoothly, protect your belongings, and help ensure you get the finish you're hoping for. Here's what we discuss with customers ahead of any work.

The first thing to consider is access. Plastering involves moving materials and equipment through your home, so clear routes to the rooms being worked on make a real difference. That might mean moving furniture back, taking up rugs, or simply making sure there's a clear path from the front door. We'll talk through access arrangements during the quote so there are no surprises on the day.

Next, think about what needs protecting. Plaster creates dust, and wet plaster can mark anything it touches. Where possible, it helps to remove small items, pictures and curtains from the rooms being worked on. For larger furniture that can't be moved out, we protect it with dust sheets and sheeting as part of our preparation. We protect the working area as thoroughly as possible and aim to leave your home as we found it.

It's also worth thinking about the surfaces themselves. If you know there are loose areas of plaster, cracks, or damage from previous leaks, mention it when you enquire — photographs can be really helpful. Any underlying issues, like an active leak or a damp problem, need to be resolved before damaged finishes are repaired, otherwise the new plaster will simply fail again. We'll assess all of this on site.

Finally, think about timing. Fresh plaster needs to dry before it can be decorated, and drying times depend on the material, thickness and conditions in the room. If you're planning to decorate afterwards, or you have other trades coming in, it's worth factoring in that drying period. We'll give you project-specific drying and decorating guidance once the work is complete.

If you're planning some plastering work and you're not sure how to prepare, don't worry — we'll talk you through everything during your free on-site quote. Get in touch and we'll help you get ready for a smooth, well-finished job.
