How much does a plasterer cost in Exeter and Devon?

Plastering costs in Exeter and the wider Devon region generally reflect property size, wall condition, and project scope. For a standard double bedroom, homeowners typically pay between £400 and £750 for full plastering, while skimming over existing, sound walls usually costs between £300 and £500. Plastering an individual wall ranges from £150 to £250, and ceiling re-plastering or skimming typically starts around £300 to £550. The average day rate for a qualified local plasterer in Devon sits between £180 and £300 per day, varying based on whether the tradesperson works independently or with an assistant.

Total estimates fluctuate according to the preparation required before trowelling begins. Older properties in Exeter and rural Devon often demand extensive prep work, including stripping heavy wallpaper, hacking off blown plaster, or applying bonding agents to high-suction substrates. Specialist materials significantly alter pricing as well; traditional lime plastering for historic stone or cob properties carries a premium, often averaging £1,300 or more per room due to multi-coat applications and extended curing times.

To secure accurate quotes, gather at least three itemised proposals from local tradespeople detailing whether materials, waste removal, and background preparation are covered. Verify that your plasterer carries active public liability insurance and holds relevant trade qualifications, such as an NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Plastering or accreditation with the Federation of Master Builders. Checking local reviews and recent portfolio photographs within Devon provides reliable verification of craftsmanship and punctuality.
